24 Parganas North is a district located in southern West Bengal, India. The district is 107 km from Nadia in the north, 318 km from Bangladesh in the north and east, 66.1 km from 24 Parganas South and 66.1 km from Hoogly in the west. The district, which covers a total area of 4,094 Sq. Km, is part of the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta and lies on the banks of River Ganges. It also contains many other rivers such as Ichchamati, Jamuna and Bidyadhari. Ancient history tells that the district was part of the Gangaridi Kingdom, Dharmapala Kingdom and Pala Kingdom. The Information Technology Hub of Kolkata lies in this district, which has numerous well-knownmultinational companies. The main occupations of the people in this district are farming, fishing and other agricultural activities. There are five administrative subdivisions in this district, namely Barrackpore, Barasat Sadar, Basirhat, Bangaon and Bidhannagar. It also consists of 33 assembly constituencies. The electrified suburban rail network of the Eastern Railway zone lies in this district and provides easy access to Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hoogly and many more places. The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Road in the district operates both domestic as well as international flights to North-East India, Bangkok, and Bangladesh. Many state highways of Kolkata pass through the district that provides an appropriate mode of transport. The Sundarbans National Park and the Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary also lie in the district.
