Chinsurah is one of the oldest cities located in West Bengal, India. It is also known as Hoogly-Chinsura, Chuchura or just simply Hoogly. It is part of the Chuchura assembly constituency and the Hoogly Lok Sabha constituency. Portuguese founded the city as Ugulium in 1579 and was part of the Bhurshut Kingdom. The merging of two towns, Hugli and Chinsura, formed the municipality. It lies on the banks of Bhagirathy-Hoogly River and is located just 10 km from Kolkata. The Chinsura Railway Station connects the city to Howrah, Bandel, Burdwan and the Howrah Ghat Railway Station connects the city to the eastern and western parts of the River Ganges. Naihati, which is located just 27 km away, can be reached through ferry services. Buses, autos as well as cabs also contribute to the transportation. The Grand Trunk Road (GT Road) is the main artery that passes through the city.Several educational institutions and religious places are also located in the proximity of the city.
