Kalyani, nicknamed the Smart City, is a city in the Nadia district of West Bengal, India. It lies on the banks of Hoogly River and covers an estimated area of 29.14 Sq. Km. The city was an American Airbase during the World War II. It is part of the Kalyani assembly constituency and Bangaon Lok Sabha constituency. The city is located just 50 km from Kolkata through the Kolkata metropolitan area in the north. Kalyani Expressway, National Highway 2, National Highway 34, Eastern Metropolitan Bypass are some of the main roads that connect with the city. The Kalyani Main Railway Station is the major mode of transportation to the city. Kalyani Silpanchal, Kalyani Ghoshpara and Kalyani Simanta are the other railway stations that are near to the city. It is located 45 km from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, which operates both domestic and international flights. Bus, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws also contribute to the communication of the city. Kalyani is known as an important centre of education in the state and consists of many renowned educational institutions. Prominent institutions include University of Kalyani, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Julien Day School, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and more. Other important landmarks in the city are Bengal Cricket Academy Ground, and Kalyani Football Stadium, which hosts many i-League football games.
