Malda is a district of West Bengal, India that lies on the banks of River Ganga. It is the gateway of North Bengal and was ruled by Pala Empire as well as the Gupta Empire in ancient times. It is located 347 km from Kolkata, 169 km from Murshidabad, 109 km from North Dinajpur, 59 km from South Dinajpur, 83 km from Santhal Parganas of Jharkand, 146 km from Purnea of Bihar, and 401 km from Bangladesh. The district is divided into 17 administrative subdivisions. The district is known for its religious festivities and many festivals are celebrated throughout the year such as Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Id-ul-Fitr, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas and Malda festival. Cultural fairs are also organized yearly with some of them, including Kahala Urush, Ramkeli Fair, Gazole Utsab, Charu Baba Mela, and Piran-e-Pir.
